2020年１月31日でイギリスからEUが離脱しましたが、イギリスの欧州議員で、暴言と歯に衣着せぬスピーチで有名なナイジェル･ファラージ氏が、欧州議会でイギリスの離脱前の最期のスピーチを行いました。

Indeed, there’s an historic battle going on now across the West: in Europe, America and elsewhere. It is globalism against populism. And you may loathe populism, but I’ll tell you a funny thing, it’s becoming very popular, and it has great benefits: no more financial contributions, no more European Court of Justice, no more common fisheries policy, no more being talked down to, no more being bullied, no more Guy Verhofstadt. I mean, what’s not to like?

人によって聴き取れない所は違うと思いますが、私が分からなかった所は、主に以下の所でした。表現や単語を知らないせいで聴き取れない。という感じでした。
- loathe: 酷く嫌う
- being talked down to :見下される
- what's not to like?: 嫌いな分けがない
私は "globalism vs populism" と言ってしまいそうですが、vs の代わりに against も使えるようす。
また、"put someone down" 誰々の事をけなす。という表現があるのは知っていたのですが、"talk down to" という表現は知りませんでした。イメージは近いですが、なんで最期に "to"が来るのかは・・・こういうのは「こう使われるから」が理由だと思うので暗記ですね・・・
ちなみに、ここで言及されている"Guy Verhofstadt (ヒー・フェルホフスタット) " 氏は、同じ欧州議会の議員で、途中でカメラに移っている以下の方です。Wikipedia では、「ヒー」と書かれてますが「ギー」と聞こえます。
議会のルール守らずに国旗を振るファラージ氏に対しての皮肉の効いた言い返しと、そしてヘイトに対して断固たる立場を取る欧州議会の議長 (President) の力強いコメントについても見てみたいと思います。
この記事ではカットしていますが、後半では ファラージ氏が、"we just hate the European Union" という言葉をスピーチの中で使っていた事に言及しています。

Can I just say that the word ‘hate’ was used in the last contribution. I really think, given what we heard before this, that we should not ‘hate’ anyone, or any people or any nation.

誰に許可を求めているわけではないけど、「これを付け加えていいかな、でも一言付け加えよう」たい時の "Can I just say" が自分では言えないな。と思いました。
子供っぽいイギリスに対して、親がいましめるような欧州議会でした。
