何ともやりきれないニュースが多いのだけれども、震災のニュースを見ていて、よく見かけるので、新たに覚えた言い回しをメモ。
- Condolence(s) - お悔やみ
Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou sent a message of condolences to his Japanese counterpart Naoto Kan Saturday
日常では、滅多に使わない（にこした事は無い）表現だが、あまりにも頻出するし、自分自身も海外の人に言われるようなった。
複数形で使われる。 「signing a condoloence book」 という言い方も見かけた。日本語では、「記帳する」となる。記帳の本自体は、日本語でなんと言うのかは・・・後で調べよう。。
- thoughts and prayes - 思慮と祈り
Please know you are in our thoughts and prayers
これもいろんな所でセットで使われていた。英語独特の表現だろう。「My thoughts and prayers are with you」等、いろんなパターンで使われる。はじめは、thoughts 部分を単独で訳そうとしてしまって、首を捻ってしまった。
一種の成句として浸透しているようで、応用例として、後述する「thoughts and gratitude」というのもあった。
- be unaccnounted for - 行方不明である
Some people are still unaccounted for in earthquake
News で繰り返し言われるので、耳に付いた。。あまり馴染みたくない言葉だが・・
反対に安否が確認された事は、「All students have been accounted for 」と言う。missing という言い回しは良く聞く気がするが、災害で”行方不明者”と堅く表現しなければならない場合は、この表現になるようだ。
- working around the clock - 不眠不休で
The SDF team is working around the clock
元々知っている言い回しだが、良く出てくるので。SDF (Self Deffence Force: 自衛隊） という言葉も、News では、特に何の acronym なのか、説明無しに普通に使われている。（初めは説明していたのかもしれないが、今は SDFで通じる）
- unfolding - 次々と明らかになる。
The unfolding nuclear crisis in Japan takes a toll on uranium prices
形容詞なので、正確な意味を知らなくても文章を読むのは困らないので、初めは読み飛ばしていたいたが何度も出てくるので、流石に調べた。「take a toll」も「大打撃を与える」とうい意味。
- be compromised - (機械などに) 障害が起きた
Boron absorbs neutrons during a nuclear reaction and can be used in an effort to stop a meltdown if the zirconium cladding on uranium fuel rods is compromised.
今回の原発事故では、ディーゼル・エンジンだったりいろいろな機械が障害を起こしている。
「妥協する」の意味しか知らなかったが、「障害が起きた」という意味があるようだ。新聞、ニュースを問わず良く使われる。
clad は、「身にまとう」などの意味で、「zirconium cladding on uranium」 「ウラニウムをジルコニウムで包んだ」と言う意味になる。
- avert - (災害、危機を）回避する

原発の話で良く出てくる。
- in the artermath of / in the wake of ～の余波で
in the aftermath of a devastating earthquake and tsunami,
But only a small number of farms have been tested because officials have been overwhelmed in the wake of the earthquake
artermath の方は、成句でなくても単独で意味が通じるので、目にする頻度が多い( wake は、単独では使っても"余波"という意味がわかりにくい?ので、必然的に成句として使われる）。overwhelmed も今回の地震と津波を表す表現として頻出している。
- On behalf of ～ - ～を代表して
On behalf of our team, our thoughts and gratitude are with you.
よく使われるので意味はなんとなく知っていたが、これも今回いろいろなグループが日本への励ましの言葉を表明する状況で、よく目にした。gratitude は、”感謝の気持ち” 。”thoughts and prayers” の変形。この例文は、日本で被災地のサポートをする団体に海外の団体が感謝の意を表す時に使っていた文章なので、prayers の部分が、gratitude に変化している。
- blast - 爆発
The hole or holes in the roof caused by an earlier blast did not appear big enough to allow sufficient amounts of water in, he said. (New York Times)
同じ爆発を表す explosion という単語よりよく見かけた。vapor (蒸気）も頻出単語。
- spinach - ほうれん草
the government said it had found higher than normal levels of radioactivity in spinach and milk at farms up to 90 miles away from the plants
こんな時でないと、まず使わない単語だ。。。
- ravage ～ - ～を酷く破壊する
The wave completely leveled fishing villages and residential enclaves up and down the sound, ravaged the city sewage-treatment plant and destroyed better than 1.5 miles of shops and apartments on the town’s outskirts
形容詞として「ravaged nuclear plant」のような使い方も見られる。
例文は結構難しい単語（自分にとって）あるので、メモしておくと、「enclave」は、居留地などの”飛び地”や何らかの区別されたエリアを指す言葉。「sewage-treatment plant」は下水処理場。
例文がちょっと難しく解読が難しい。。「the sound」 は、「入り江」のようだ。音のsound の別の意味。
「better than 1.5 mile」 の better は、日本人だと良い意味を含んだ形にとってしまうので、自分で使うには少し発想を柔軟にする必要がある。
- crippled 動作不能の
Efforts to stabilize the crippled nuclear power plant in Fukushima stalled on Monday
New York Times に「crippled nuclear plant」 で何度も出てきていた。日本人だと broken とかを使いそう。crippled より軽い状況だと、compromised になるかな。。
- unprecedent 前例の無い
which has been grappling with an unprecedented set of challenges since March 11
これも原発の事故絡みの事象が「前例がない」事だらけでよく使われている。
